Services and Pricing

Although I only do this part-time, I am starting to offer some services. Everything may not be available since I have a limited amount of time currently to do everything.

Chair Building and Seat Replacement

I currently build different chair styles and may even have some built and ready. If you are near Abingdon, VA, I have some examples on display at Holston Mountain Artisans and ‘Round the Mountain’s Southwest Virginia Cultural Center & Marketplace. You can also make an appointment to come by my shop between Abingdon and Bristol.

I can also weave a new seat for a chair you already own.

Chair Types

  • Boggs-Style Chairs - These range from $800 and up, depending on the type of wood and seat material.

  • Shaker-Style Chairs - These are loosely based on the famous Shaker chairs and rockers. Price depends on size, wood type, and seat material. A standard dining chair in white oak with rush seat is $500. Other woods and seat types would change the pricing. Rockers with arms start at $800.

Seat Replacement

If you have an existing chair that you love, but the seat has seen better days, I can remove the old seat material and install a new seat to make the chair as good as new. I can also tighten loose joints and put on a new oil finish if needed.

Price Estimates:

  • Rattan Reed Woven Seat - $4 per inch of the longest side of the seat (typically the front). A 17” chair would be $68. Pricing includes a coat of super blonde shellac. If the chair is an odd shape and/or has a woven back as well, please contact me for pricing.

  • Shake Tape Woven Seat - $6 per include of the longest side of the seat. Price includes a foam cushion between the layers of tape. A variety of colors are available. If the chair has a woven back as well, please contact me for pricing.

  • Fiber Rush Woven Seat - $4 per inch of the longest side of the seat (typically the front). A 17” chair would be $68. Pricing includes a coat of super blonde shellac. Cardboard spacers are used to help the rush last longer. I do not weave backs using fiber rush.

  • Flat Fiber Splint Woven Seat - $4 per inch of the longest side of the seat (typically the front). A 17” chair would be $68. I can also weave backs with this material, contact me for pricing.

  • Hickory Bark Woven Seat - $200 and up, depending on availability. This is the traditional seating material in the Appalachian mountains area. It is very labor intensive to harvest and hard to find on the commercial market, although occasionally is available.

Custom Furniture

I’m not in the full custom furniture business, but if you have something specific in mind that is similar to the projects on my portfolio pages, please check with me on availability. Note that I prefer building furniture using traditional construction methods and techniques out of solid hardwood.
