Fiber Rush Woven Seat
These seats are woven from a paper fiber rush. The rush gets soaked in water and then woven in a continuous and very tight pattern. Small triangles of cardboard are used to fill in the corners. This material is inexpensive, but very labor intensive to weave. After drying, the seat is sealed with super blonde shellac which slightly darkens and seals the rush.
Before and after photos of an antique chair with a rush seat. The chair was cleaned and given a quick oil wipe down before weaving a new rush seat. The seat will get a light shellac coating to darken it slightly and give it some protection. It should last another 50 years!
