These seats are woven in a 2-over/2-under herringbone pattern. The reed is similar to what you see in woven baskets. It gets soaked in water to soften and then woven while wet. As it dries, it shrinks slightly and tightens up the seat. After drying, it is sealed top and bottom with a super blonde shellac.
